Grandma's Dumplings Co-founder, Yana, volunteered for Paw Help before coming to Canada for a year, by fostering 10 rescue dogs from Ukraine. 🐩🐕🦮🐕‍🦺

Paw Help is helping rescue animals daily, by providing shelter, vaccination, sterilization and any medical attention needed. They find loving families for every dog, even the most vulnerable.

Turns out that writing a business plan and launching a business is not the hardest part.

💸To keep going with no profit is really, really hard.

This week has been the hardest since we launched Grandma's Dumplings last month.
We actually struggled to pay our own rent.

Our biggest expense is renting the commissary kitchen. Every time we have to pay $900+ (including $500 deposit, which we have to ask back after using the kitchen).

Dumplings and borshch at $10/portion on a Sunday market simply can't cover these expenses. Groceries, print work and packaging - yes, but not the commissary rental and the point of sale subscription.

Therefore, we are considering pausing the food delivery option for now, not renting the kitchen for a while and just focusing on cooking for the market from home.
We need to save up $1.5 k for a more favorable kitchen rental contract.

Sometimes we wonder - should we even bother anymore at all?

One month into running a small food delivery business 🥟
What have we done?

🍀We sold our dumplings, borshch, garlic buns and cheesecake on St Patrick's Day at the local brewery Rainhard.
🧺 We participated in a Sunday Variety Market near the St Lawrence Market.
🔧 We were setting up the online ordering and delivery platforms - it's not that easy!
👩🏼‍🍳 We cooked a lot! ❤️

While it is fun to do all these many things for our own project - we do have to start making profit soon. Even though it's so much fun to participate in markets and events!

How was Grandma's Dumplings first week?
We can definitely say one thing - running a small business is hard. It's exhausting, but it's so interesting!

We really enjoy doing all the amazing tasks to get Ukrainian food into the world and make you fall in love with it and with Ukraine 💛💙

Conclusion? To get us up and running so far in March we spent almost $2 k with our credit cards 💸

We earned $260 at the St Patrick's Day event 🍀🍻
Did it pay? Not yet!
But was it worth it? Absolutely!

Next Sunday, 23 March, you can find us at the Sunday Variety Market at St Lawrence, 125 Esplanade.

For now we will be focusing on getting the visibility and participating in events.

It is a very nice shared commercial kitchen in Northern Toronto.

📋 At Grandma's Dumplings we had a to-do list for launching the delivery.

The preparations were going on the whole week. Building the website, setting up the ordering system, buying the packaging, etc. 😵‍💫

👩🏼‍🍳 Of course we need lots and lots of supplies, both to take with us to the commissary kitchen, and to portion at home afterwards.

Surprisingly, the groceries for the first delivery round were only 300$, which is a big relief.

1️⃣ 🥔🍄‍🟫 Dumplings with potatoes and mushrooms - Banderivski.
This name has gotten a controversial reputation but we want to bring it back to its roots and share what it means for us, Western Ukrainians.

In Western Ukraine this name - Banderivtsi - is associated with something very spiritually Ukrainian and patriotic. Banderivski songs about fighting for Ukrainian independence since the beginning of 20th century, Banderivski dumplings that can be spotted by being authentically Ukrainian, the way so many generations before us loved to cook them.

2️⃣ 🥩 Dumplings with beef and dill - Nezlamni (Unbroken).
The concept of these dumplings is dedicated to all the Ukrainian defenders that are protecting Ukrainian sovereignty and independence in the current war. If you eat these dumplings - you will get as much strength!

3️⃣ 🧀 Dumplings with cheese and dill - Maidanivski.
Just like Ukrainians who are enforcing direct democracy by gathering to protest in the state's central square, Maidan, these dumplings demonstrate how revolutionary the cottage cheese can be in a dumpling.

4️⃣ 🍒 Black cherry dumplings - Kupalski.
This is a taste of Ukrainian summer, especially the holiday in July - Kupala. On Kupala prehistoric pagan traditions unite with Christian customs. We would like to offer you a little piece of it.

Even though it didn't require a Permanent Residence - it did require a decision on our asylum claims. It can take up to 2 years to get this decision for us.

🤓 Prior to that we have been working on a business plan.
Writing a business plan is a must for a startup.
💡It's important to research the industry, shape your business idea and calculate all your costs.
📃 You need to know which permits and business licences are required. For example, if you cook food - you must have the Food Handler's certificate.
🏛️ You have to decide which legal person will be established - a corporation, partnership or one-man business.
💸 Then the most important - how much money do you need to start operating.

Grandma's Dumplings is in the process of applying for funding.
